Lake Mburo National Park
Uganda's smallest savannah park - zebra, impala and the only place in the country you can walk and cycle among game.
Overview
Lake Mburo is only 370 square kilometres, which is precisely what makes it useful: it sits on the main road between Kampala and the western parks, so it costs nothing in travel time, and it offers things the bigger parks do not. There are no lions in any number and no elephants until recently, which is why walking safaris, horseback rides and mountain biking among the wildlife are permitted here and almost nowhere else in Uganda. The park is the only place in the country with impala, and one of only two with zebra - both are everywhere. Acacia woodland, rolling grassland and a chain of five lakes fringed with papyrus give it a gentle, open character, and the boat trip on Lake Mburo itself is good for hippo, crocodile and the African finfoot. Leopard and hyena are present but seldom seen, and the birding is strong with over 350 species including the red-faced barbet, found nowhere else in Uganda.
